A lot of us trivialize depression (for the
most part, unintentionally) by dropping a platitude on a depressed friend or
family as if that is the one thing they badly need to hear. A few things that
are unhelpful to say to someone who is experiencing depression include:
- “Pull yourself together, dude.”
- “Always think positive!”
- “You should do something for others.”
- “There are people who are going through real problems right now. Think of that.”
- “Maybe you just don’t want to get better?”
